The complete chloroplast genome of Polygala tenuifolia, a critically endangered species in Korea

ABSTRACT Polygala tenuifolia Willd. is an Oriental plant that is widely distributed in East Asia; but the medicinal plant is a critically endangered species in Korea, where only a few individuals exist. In spite of that, there have been no molecular conservation studies on P. tenuifolia . In this study, we elucidated the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of P. tenuifolia and investigated its phylogenetic position based on the cp genomes of related taxa. Results showed the cp genome was 165,423 bp in length, consisting of a large single-copy region of 83,699 bp, a small single-copy region of 8,044 bp, and two inverted repeat regions of 36,840 bp. In addition, the plastid genome contained 123 genes, including 85 protein-coding genes, 38 transfer RNA genes, and 8 ribosomal RNA genes. The present study is the first to report the complete cp genome of genus Polygala, information which may be valuable for future molecular phylogenetic and conservation studies on P. tenuifolia .

격자형 한반도 최저극값온도 예측 및 Proto3를 활용한 별나팔꽃(Ipomoea triloba)의 서식적합지 예측

ABSTRACT This study was conducted to estimate the mean annual extreme minimum temperature raster and predict the potential distribution of the invasive plant, Ipomoea triloba , on the Korean peninsula. We collected annual extreme minimum temperature and mean coldest month minimum temperature data from 129 weather stations on the Korean peninsula from 1990-2019 and used this data to create a linear regression model. The min temperature of the coldest month raster from Worldclim V2 were used to estimate a 30 second spatial resolution, mean annual extreme minimum temperature raster of the Korean peninsula using a regression model. We created three climatic rasters of the Korean peninsula for use with the Proto3 species distribution model and input the estimated mean annual extreme minimum temperature raster, a KöppenGeiger climate class raster from Beck et al. (2018), and we also used the mean annual preci-pitation from Worldclim V2. The potential distribution of I. triloba was estimated using the Proto3 model with 117 occurrence points. As a result, the estimated area for a potential distribution of I. triloba was found to be 50.7% (111,969 km 2 ) of the Korean peninsula.

Abstract To investigate the distribution of vascular plants growing at Mt. Guryong, we surveyed from March in 2016 to October in 2017. The flora of Mt. Guryong was classified as a total of 526 taxa comprising of 87 families, 298 genus, 449 species, 4 subspecies, 63 varieties, 10 forma. Among them, the endemic plants in Korea were investigated as 10 taxa of including Pseudostellaria coreana (Nakai) Ohwi. The Korean rare plants species were investigated as 16 taxa, among them degree of CR investigated as 1 taxa of Cypripedium macranthum Sw., VU investigated as 5 taxa of including Rhododendron micranthum Turcz., degree of LC investigated 9 taxa of including Clematis koreana Kom., degree of DD investigated 1 taxa of Adenophora grandiflora Nakai. Endemic plants were investigated as 14 taxa of including seudostellaria coreana (Nakai) Ohwi and The floristic special plants were a total of 84 taxa such as 2 taxa in degree V(in cluding Polypodium virginianum L.), 7 taxa in degree IV (including Anemone reflexa Steph. & Willd.), 21 taxa in degree III(including Celtis aurantiaca Nakai), 22 taxa in degree II (including Thelypteris phegopteris (L.) Sloss.) and 31 taxa in degree I (including Cimicifuga simplex (DC.) Turcz.) was carried out to provide basic data. The naturalized plants were investigated as 37 taxa of including Chenopodium ficifolium Smith., Thlaspi arvense L., Rumex crispus L. and the percentage of urbanization index was 11.53%, the naturalized ratio was 6.99% respectively.

The complete chloroplast genome of horned holly, Ilex cornuta Lindi. & Paxton (Aquifoliaceae)

Abstract Ilex cornuta Lindl. & Paxton is a species distributed in eastern China and Korea, utilized as traditional medical plants as well as horticultural species. Here, we completed chloroplast genome of I. cornuta. Its length is 157,224 bp long and has four subregions: 86,610 bp of large single copy (LSC) and 18,429 bp of small single copy (SSC) regions are separated by 26,092 bp of inverted repeat (IR) regions including 131 genes (86 protein-coding genes, eight rRNAs, and 37 tRNAs). The overall GC content of this chloroplast genome is 37.7% and those in the LSC, SSC, and IR regions are 35.7%, 31.9%, and 42.9%, respectively. Phylogenetic trees show that I. cornuta is clustered in Section Ilex clade clearly. In addition, two Ilex species from South America are not in a basal clade, which is different from previous phylogenetic study, suggesting more Ilex chloroplast genomes are required to understand phylogenetic relationships of Ilex species.

태백산국립공원 백단사코스의 고도별 관속식물상 변화와 환경요인 분석

요약 태백산국립공원의 고도별 관속식물의 종다양성 패턴 및 분포변화를 파악하기 위해 백단사매표소(874m)에서 천제단 (1,560m)까지 해발 100m 단위로 등분하여 8개 구간에 대한 식물목록을 작성하였다. 총 4회에 걸쳐 현지조사를 실시한 결과 89과 240속 345종 5아종 34변종 1품종의 총 385분류군이 출현하였다. 고도별 종다양성의 변화를 분석한 결과, 고도가 높아짐에 따라 점차 감소하다가 특정 구간에서부터 다시 증가하는 경향을 보였다. 구간별 출현종의 생육지 유형을 분석한 결과, 고도가 높아짐에 따라 산림에 생육하는 종의 비율은 증가하였고, 교란지에 생육하는 종의 비율은 인위적 간섭이 높은 곳에서 높은 비율로 출현하였다. 구간별 목본식물과 초본식물이 각각 차지하는 비율을 비교한 결과, 목본식물의 경우 고도가 높아짐에 따라 점차 증가하다가 인위적 간섭이 높은 구간에서 큰 폭으로 감소하는 경향을 보였고, 초본식물의 경우 그 반대의 경향성을 나타냈다. DCA기법을 이용하여 출현종의 고도별 분포변화를 분석한 결과, Ⅰ축상의 해발 900m와 1,300m를경계로 3개의 그룹으로 구분되었다. 구간별 식분의 배치는 Ⅰ축상의 오른쪽으로부터 왼쪽을 향해 고도에 따라 배열되었고,Ⅰ축은 온량지수(WI)와 유의한 상관관계를 나타냄에 따라 고도에 따른 온도변화가 식물분포의 양상에 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서 기후변화로 인한 기온상승은 식물종의 수직 분포 한계선과 식물군락의 종조성 변화 및 다양성에 영향을 미칠 것으로 예측된다. 본 연구결과는 생물다양성의 보전과 기후변화에 따른 관리방안 마련을 위한 기초자료로 활용될 것으로 판단된다.

Dynamics of Abies nephrolepis Seedlings in Relation to Environmental Factors in Seorak Mountain

Abstract : We present novel evidence of environmental drivers of seedling density in Abies nephrolepis, an alpine and subalpine tree species. Continuous monitoring of natural conditions is required to understand forest ecosystem dynamics. We investigated Abies nephrolepis seedling dynamics in relation to biotic and abiotic factors. The survey, which included the measurement of trees and seedlings, was carried out from March to October in 2016 and 2018. Monitoring sites in the coniferous forests of Seorak Mountain were divided into 27 quadrats. We analyzed relationships using simple and multiple linear regression. The majority of Abies nephrolepis individuals had a diameter at breast height less than l0 cm, and the number of seedlings increased over the study period. 한반도 풍혈지의 선태식물상

Abstract Algific talus slopes provide microclimates suitable for disjunct or relict populations of northern plant species at low elevation habitats in the temperate zones. The propose of this study was to assess the phytogeographical significance and produce a strategy for the comprehensive conservation of the vegetation on algific talus slopes. Therefore, we studied the floristics of bryophytes on 15 algific talus slopes in Korea. The bryophytes on the algific talus slopes in Korea consisted of 59 families, 138 genera, 226 species, two subspecies, and five varieties, totaling 233 taxa. Peculiarly, many northern bryophytes, such as Andreaea rupestris var. fauriei (Besch.) Takaki., Buxbaumia minakatae S. Okamura, Racomitrium lanuginosum (Hedw.) Brid., Hylocomium splendens (Hedw.) Schimp., and Pleurozium schreberi (Willd. ex Brid.) Mitt. were found on the algific talus slopes. Of them, unrecorded species from south Korea numbered 14 taxa and unrecorded species from the Korean peninsula numbered seven taxa. A similarity analysis based on the bryophyte flora showed that the index of similarity between regions with similar environmental factors was high. This means that the bryophyte flora composition on each algific talus slopes was affected by topography and microclimate. Algific talus slopes are phytogeographically significant microhabitats where northern plant species that advanced southward during the latest glacial age have been isolated and adapted. However, algific talus slopes have constantly been destroyed or damaged by humans without consideration of conservation. Conservation strategies to ensure the biodiversity and effective management of algific talus slopes in Korea are discussed in detail.

Macrolepiota in Korea : New Records and a New Species

Abstract The genus Macrolepiota (Agaricales, Basidiomycota) is easy to recognize at the genus level because of big, fleshy basidiocarps with squamules covering the pileus; a single or double annulus; and big, thick-walled basidiospores with a germ pore. However, morphological identification is often unreliable in Macrolepiota due to similar morphological features among species. Due to the uncertainty of previous morphological identification in the genus Macrolepiota , it is necessary to re-examine Korean Macrolepiota using molecular data. We reexamined 34 Macrolepiota specimens collected from 2012 to 2018 in Korea using a reverse taxonomic approach, whereby species identification was first done based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region analysis, followed by morphological ation. We identified the presence of four species: M. detersa, M. mastoidea, M. procera, and M. umbonata sp. nov. Two species (M. detersa and M. mastoidea) were previously unrecorded from Korea and M. umbonata is a new species. Detailed descriptions of all four species and taxonomic key are provided in this study. Macrolepiota procera and M. umbonata are distributed through the country, but M. detersa and M. mastoidea are distributed only in limited areas. According to our results, the combination of ITS locus and morphology proved to be a robust approach to evaluate the taxonomic status of Macrolepiota species in Korea. Additional surveys are needed to verify the species diversity and clarify their geographic distribution.

New record of ladybird beetle (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in Korea, with a checklist

Abstract The ladybird beetle (Coleoptera) is composed of approximately 6,000 species around the world belonging to about 360 genera. However, the genus of Horniolus of family Coccinellidae has not been recorded in Korean peninsula. Four adult specimens were collected from Daedun Mountain, South Korea. Horniolus fortunatus is distinguished from other Horniolus species by body length 2.7e2.9mm; pronotum dark with two reddish brown markings laterally; elytra black with four transverse markings; abdominal postcoxal line complete; penis widest at base and convergent at apical part; and distinct shorter than parameres. Habitus photographs, diagnosis, and line-drawings of male genitalia are provided with a key to the species of genus Horniolus in Palearctic region.
