Assessing the Potential Distribution of Oxalis latifolia, a Rapidly Spreading Weed, in East Asia under Global Climate Change

Abstract : Oxalis latifolia, a perennial herbaceous weed, is a highly invasive species that poses a threat to agricultural lands worldwide. East Asia is under a high risk of invasion of O. latifolia under global climate change. To evaluate this risk, we employed maximum entropy modeling considering two shared socio-economic pathways (SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5). Currently, a small portion (8.02%) of East Asia is within the O. latifolia distribution, with the highest coverages in Chinese Taipei, China, and Japan (95.09%, 9.8%, and 0.24%, respectively). However, our projections indicated that this invasive weed will likely be introduced to South Korea and North Korea between 2041 and 2060 and 2081 and 2100, respectively. The species is expected to cover approximately 9.79% and 23.68% (SSP2-4.5) and 11.60% and 27.41% (SSP5-8.5) of the total land surface in East Asia by these time points, respectively. South Korea and Japan will be particularly susceptible, with O. latifolia potentially invading up to 80.73% of their territory by 2081–2100. Mongolia is projected to remain unaffected. This study underscores the urgent need for effective management strategies and careful planning to prevent the introduction and limit the expansion of O. latifolia in East Asian countries.

용기 종류에 따른 쉬나무 용기묘의 생장 및 묘목품질 특성

요 약: 본 연구는 대체에너지, 생태복원 및 밀원식물용 등으로 이용되어 묘목 수요가 증가되고 있는 쉬나무(Tetradium daniellii (Benn.) T. G. Hartley)의 우량한 용기묘 생산을 위한 적정 용기 규격(생육밀도, 용적 등)을 구명하고자 실시하였 다. 적정 용기 구명 실험은 쉬나무를 임업시설양묘용 플라스틱 용기 5종(500 ml, 350 ml, 320 ml, 300 ml, 250 ml)을 사용 하여 실시하였다. 실험결과, 간장과 근원경 생장은 SI 350 용기에서 현저히 높은 값을 보였으며, 대체적으로 용기 구 용적 이 크고 생육밀도가 낮을수록 높은 생장을 나타냈다. 묘목의 뿌리형태특성을 측정한 결과 SI 350 용기에서 뿌리발달이 가 장 왕성하게 조사되었다. 건물생산량도 SI 350에서 가장 높았고 전체적으로 간장 및 근원경 생장 결과와 유사한 경향으로 나타났다. 묘목의 품질을 나타내는 지수인 QI(Quality Index)도 SI 350 용기에서 0.97로 가장 높게 조사되었다. 연구결과를 종합하면, 쉬나무 용기묘의 우량한 묘목생산을 위한 적정 용기 종류는 SI 350 용기로 판단된다.

각호산(영동군)의 관속식물과 수직분포

Abstract : This study was conducted to investigate the vertical distribution and vascular plants in the Gakho mountain. Form the results of three field surveys from May 2022 to September 2022, a total of 478 total taxa, representing 426 species, 11 subspecies, 35 varieties, four forms, and two hybrids were identified, which were categorized in 282 genera and 94 families. We identified the elevational distribution ranges of 398 taxa of vascular plants. Among them, 19 taxa were endemic to Korea, one taxon was identified as a rare plant. The floristic target plants amounted to 72 taxa, specifically two taxa of grade V, two taxa of grade IV, 16 taxa of grade III, 27 taxa of grade II, and 25 taxa of grade I. Further, 71 taxa were identified as northern lineage plants. A total of 19 taxa of alien plants were identified, with a Naturalized Index of 4.0%, an Urbanization Index of 6.6%, and three plants that disturbed the ecosystem. The result of analyzing the pattern of species richness showed a reversed hump shape with minimum richness at midhigh elevation. A cluster analysis showed a high degree of similarity between adjacent elevation sections that are geographically adjacent with similar habitat environments. Warmth index in the Gakho mountain ranged from 57.2°C·month to 84.2°C·month. Our results provide basic data on vascular plants and valuable information on elevational distribution ranges of current plant species in the Gakho mountain, which could serve as a baseline for comparison of the shifts in elevation under future climate change.

Identification of the Plant Family Caryophyllaceae in Korea Using DNA Barcoding

Abstract : Caryophyllaceae is a large angiosperm family, with many species being utilized as ornamental or medicinal plants in Korea, in addition to several endangered species that are managed by the government. In this study, we used DNA barcoding for the accurate identification of Korean Caryophyllaceae. A total of 78 taxa (n = 215) were sequenced based on three chloroplast regions (rbcL, matK, and psbA–trnH) and nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacers (ITS). In the neighbor-joining tree, a higher accuracy of identification was generally observed when using ITS (>73%) rather than chloroplast regions (<62%). The highest resolution was found for rbcL + ITS (77.6%), although resolution varied according to the genus. Among the genera that included two and more species, five genera (Eremogone, Minuartia, Pseudostellaria, Sagina, and Stellaria) were successfully identified. However, the species of five other genera (Cerastium, Gypsophila, Dianthus, Silene, and Spergularia) showed relatively low resolutions (0–61.1%). In the cases of Cerastium, Dianthus, and Silene, ambiguous taxonomic relationships among unidentified species may have been a factor contributing to such low resolutions. However, in contrast to these results, Gypsophila and Spergularia have been identified well in previous studies. Our findings indicate the need of taxonomic reconsideration in Korea.

Molecular Properties of β-Carotene Oxygenases and Their Potential in Industrial Production

Abstract: β-Carotene 15,150 -oxygenase (BCO1) and β-carotene 90 ,100 -oxygenase (BCO2) are potential producers of vitamin A derivatives, since they can catalyze the oxidative cleavage of dietary provitamin A carotenoids to retinoids and derivative such as apocarotenal. Retinoids are a class of chemical compounds that are vitamers of vitamin A or are chemically related to it, and are essential nutrients for humans and highly valuable in the food and cosmetics industries. β-carotene oxygenases (BCOs) from various organisms have been overexpressed in heterogeneous bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, and their biochemical properties have been studied. For the industrial production of retinal, there is a need for increased production of a retinal producer and biosynthesis of retinal using biocatalyst systems improved by enzyme engineering. The current review aims to discuss BCOs from animal, plants, and bacteria, and to elaborate on the recent progress in our understanding of their functions, biochemical properties, substrate specificity, and enzyme activities with respect to the production of retinoids in whole-cell conditions. Moreover, we specifically propose ways to integrate BCOs into retinal biosynthetic bacterial systems to improve the performance of retinal production.

백두대간 중점보전종인 댕강나무의 식생 군집 및 환경인자 특성

요 약: 오늘날 급격한 기후 변화와 지속적인 인간의 개발 압력으로 멸종의 우려에 대한 심각성이 커지고 있다. 본 연구에 서는 우리나라의 커다란 생태축인 백두대간 일대에서 출현하는 식물 가운데 중점적으로 보전해야할 식물 300종을 우선적 으로 선정하였다. 그중 석회암 지대에 출현하는 댕강나무를 최우선 보전종으로 인식하고 이들의 식생 군집과 환경인자 특 성을 구명하고자 하였다. 단양군, 영월군, 제천시 등 댕강나무 서식지 36개소를 조사지로 설정하고, 조사지 내 출현식물, 식생, 토양과 물리적 환경을 분석하였다. 조사지에서 특기할 만한 식물로 꽃꿩의다리, 덕우기름나물, 나도국수나무 등이 출 현하였다. 산림식생 군락유형은 4개의 식생유형과 7개의 종군유형으로 구분되었다. 식생군집과 환경인자의 CCA 분석결과, 종합설명력 75.2%였으며 댕강나무 서식지의 환경적 특징이 세 그룹으로 구분되었다. 이 중에서 관계성이 있었던 환경인자 는 해발고도, 경사, 유기물, 암석 비율, pH, 칼륨, 그리고 나트륨이었다. 조사지 내에서 꽃꿩의다리를 비롯하여 다수의 희귀 식물과 특산식물이 확인되어 이들 집단을 서식지 수준에서 보전할 필요가 있다고 판단하였다. 출현 식물을 토대로 분석된 식생 유형 분류와 CCA 분석에서 댕강나무 서식지의 식생 집단의 고유성과 특이성이 재차 인정되었다. 본 연구의 결과가 댕강나무 자생지의 실증적 보전을 위한 과학적 근거자료로 활용되길 기대한다.

Effects of Torrefied Wood Chips and Vermicompost on Tree Growth and Weed Biomass

Abstract: A harsh environment, slow tree growth, nutrient deficiencies, and competition between trees and weeds can impede forest establishment on reclaimed lands. We investigated the effects of torrefied wood chips (TWC) and vermicompost (VC) soil amendments on the growth of Populus euramericana Guinier, weed biomass, and soil chemical properties on reclaimed land in Saemangeum. The 2.5 Mg ha−1 and 5.0 Mg ha−1 TWC had a similar effect on tree diameter and height growth (i.e., 2.5 = 5.0 > 0 TWC) and tended to have similar, higher effect on the total biomass of P. euramericana than the 0 Mg ha−1 . The 2.5 Mg ha−1 TWC resulted in a significantly larger root biomass than the 5.0 Mg ha−1 TWC. The weed biomass was significantly larger at the 2.7 Mg ha−1 VC (i.e., 730.5–810.5 g m−2 ) than the control (605.1–610.6 g m−2 ), but VC alone was not effective for tree growth and soil amelioration. The TWC had no effect on weed biomass. Thus, the TWC and VC had contrasting effects on tree growth and weed biomass when they were used as soil amendments on salt-affected reclaimed land. VC application may promote weed proliferation, whereas TWC application may potentially increase the growth of P. euramericana and control weed growth on reclaimed lands. Our results enhance the existing knowledge on tree and weed responses to torrefied wood chips and vermicompost amendments for the sustainable management of salt-affected reclaimed lands.

Two new Rinodina lichens from South Korea, with an updated key to the species of Rinodina

Abstract: Rinodina salicis Lee & Hur and Rinodina zeorina Lee & Hur are described as new lichen-forming fungi from forested wetlands or a humid forest in South Korea. Rinodina salicis is distinguishable from Rinodina excrescens Vain., the most similar species, by its olive-gray thallus with smaller areoles without having blastidia, contiguous apothecia, non-pruinose discs, paler disc color, wider ascospores in the Pachysporariatype II, and the absence of secondary metabolites. Rinodina zeorina differs from Rinodina hypobadia Sheard by areolate and brownish thallus, non-pruinose apothecia, colorless and wider parathecium, narrower paraphyses with non-pigmented and unswollen tips, longer and narrower ascospores with angular to globose lumina, and the absence of pannarin. Molecular analyses employing internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences strongly support the two new species to be unique in the genus Rinodina. An updated key is provided to assist in the identification of all 63 taxa in Rinodina of the far eastern Asia.

참나무 5종의 생태 복원 적지 추정을 위한 경제림 육성단지의 기후와 입지 요인 분석

ABSTRACT The most important thing to successfully restore an oak forest is finding suitable climatic conditions and topographic factors for the oak species to be introduced. In this study, in order to find suitable environmental conditions for the five dominant oak trees on the Korean Peninsula, we carried out analysing the information on the location of forest vegetation on the Korean Peninsula. The range of annual mean temperature of the five oak trees was narrow in the order of Q. mongolica (7.7~14.3°C), Q. variabilis (9.2~13.8°C), Q. acutissima (10.5~14.3°C), Q. serrata (11.4~13.7°C), Q. aliena (11.0~12.9°C). The range of annual precipitation of oaks was narrow in order of Q. mongolica (1072.7~1780.9 mm), Q. variablis (1066.6~1554.9 mm), Q. acustissima (1036.5~1504.8 mm), Q. serrata (1062.6~1504.7 mm). The range of altitude was in order of Q. mongolica (147~1388 m), Q. serrata (93~950 m), Q. variabilis (90~913 m), Q. acustissima (60~516 m), Q. aliena (55~465 m). The range of slope was in the order of Q. mongolica (8~56°), Q. variabilis (5~52°), Q. serrata (11~45°), Q. aliena (15~38°), Q. acustissima (16~37°). These results are considered to be very useful in the case of ecological restoration using deciduous oak trees on the Korean Peninsula.

세종시 남부일대의 관속식물상 연구

Abstract The flora of Sejong were summarized as 531 taxa including 104 families, 315 genera, 462 species, 3 subspecies, 59 varieties and 7 form. The rare plants were 8 taxa including Nepeta cataria L. and Aristolochia ontorta Bunge. The Korea endemic plants were 9 taxa including Populus tomentiglandulosa T. B. Le and Clematis trichotoma Nakai.. The specific plants were 42 taxa including Phytolacca esculenta Van Houtte(Ⅴ), Corydalis decumbens (Thunb.) Pers(Ⅳ), Poncirus trifoliata Raf(Ⅲ), Pseudostellaria coreana (Nakai) Ohwi(Ⅱ), Cyrtomium fortunei J.Sm.(Ⅰ). The naturalized plants were 49 taxa including Sicyos angulatus L, Ambrosia trifida L, Physalis angulata L. Panicum dichotomiflorum Michx., Galinsoga parviflora Cav, and Erigeron philadelphicus L. Especially, Sicyos angulatus L., Phytolacca americana L. and Bidens frondosa L. have been spread throughout the country are required to manage. The naturalized index(NI) and urbanized index(UI) were 8.7% and 15.3%. Useful plants incuding Edible was 199 taxa, Pasture was 193 taxa, Medicinal was 178 taxa, Ornamental was 82 taxa, Timber was 25 taxa, Fiber was 18 taxa, Stain was 9 taxa. Useful plants will be important materials for plant design in recreational and healing forests.
