Modeling Habitat Suitability of the Climate-vulnerable Plant Thuja koraiensis in Response to Climate Change

Abstract : In this study, we predict the habitat suitability of Thuja koraiensis, an endemic plant species on the Korean Peninsula, and establish management strategies for its conservation. To achieve this, field surveys were conducted on the Korean Peninsula and northeastern China to determine species occurrence points. An ensemble modeling approach was implemented, combining the Random Forest, Generalized Boosted Model, and Generalized Linear Model algorithms, to explore suitable habitats. Our results show that under current climate conditions, wide suitable habitats can be found in South Korea. Furthermore, our analysis indicated that elevation had the greatest impact on the availability of suitable habitats. On the basis of the shared socioeconomic pathway data presented in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 6th Assessment Report, changes in future habitat distribution were observed for the 2050s (2040– 2060) and 2070s (2060–2080). The results indicated a significant decrease in the availability of suitable habitats in South Korea, while relatively wide suitable habitats were observed in North Korea. In particular, the elevation of suitable habitat areas gradually increased, suggesting that future suitable habitats may become isolated. These research findings substantiate the necessity for implementing appropriate measures to conserve and manage the climate-vulnerable species T. koraiensis to ensure its long-term preservation and sustainable management.

Characteristics of rhizosphere and endogenous bacterial community of Ulleung-sanmaneul, an endemic

Abstract: Microbes influence plant growth and fitness. However, the structure and function of microbiomes associated with rare and endemic plants remain underexplored. To investigate the bacterial community structure of Ulleung-sanmaneul (U-SMN), an endemic plant in Korea, samples were collected from natural and cultivated habitats, and their 16S rDNA was sequenced. The root bacterial community structure differed from those of bulk soil and rhizosphere in both habitats. Endogenous bacteria in cultivated plants were less diverse than wild plants, but Luteibacter rhizovicinus , Pseudomonas fulva , and Sphingomonas pruni were shared. Co-inoculation of Pseudoxanthomonas sp. JBCE485 and Variovorax paradoxus JBCE486 promoted growth and induced salt stress resistance in Arabidopsis and chive. Changes in growth promotion and phenotypes of plants by co-inoculation were mediated by increased auxin production. Each strain colonized the roots without niche competition. The results indicated that host selectivity was influential than environmental factors in formulating endophytic bacterial composition, and domestication simplified the bacterial community diversity. Our results will contribute to the growth and maintenance of endemic U-SMN plants.

Seed Longevity and Germinability of Pulsatilla dahurica (Fisch. ex DC.) Spreng after Storage

Abstract: Determining seed longevity and optimum storage conditions is essential for long-term seed storage. However, the longevity and optimal storage conditions of Pulsatilla dahurica are unknown. Here, P. dahurica seeds collected in Korea were stored under dry conditions at −20°C, 4°C, and 25°C immediately after collection. After 1, 2, 3, 6, and 12 months, the viability and germinability were measured. After 12 months, the seeds were subjected to saturated salt accelerated aging (SSAA) for additional aging, and the viability and germinability according to the storage temperature were ed. P. dahurica seeds did not lose viability or germinability, even after storage for 12 months at all temperatures; rather the germination index increased, resulting in fast and uniform germination. Differences in aging for storage at the three temperatures, which were not observed during actual storage, were identified using SSAA. Seeds stored at 25°C showed the lowest germinability and viability after accelerated aging. Notably, seeds stored at 4°C showed the highest germinability with a slower deterioration rate compared to those stored at −20°C. Collectively, P. dahurica seeds maintained germinability without a reduction in longevity at a wide temperature range during short- term storage (≤1 year), whereas for long-term storage, the optimum storage temperature was 4°C.

남산, 오대산, 울릉도 지역의 주요 참나무과 산림식생에 대한 군락구조 비교

요약 : 한반도의 산림식생은 낙엽참나무림으로 우점되는 대륙형의 한반도형으로 특징지어진다. 따라서 본 연구는 참나무 과 산림식생이 우점하는 남산, 오대산, 울릉도 지역을 대상으로 이질적인 생태 특성에 따른 종조성과 환경인자의 상관관계 를 비교하였다. 식생조사는 2018년 5월부터 8월까지 수행하였으며 총 75개소의 조사를 실시하였다. 식생유형분류결과 총 7개 유형으로 구분되었으며, 최상위 수준에서는 내륙지역의 대표식생군락인 신갈나무군락과 도서지역의 대표식생군락인 너도밤나무군락으로 구분되었다. 신갈나무군락은 도시의 대표식생인 팥배나무군과 산악지역의 대표식생인 피나무군으로 세분되었다. 지역형에 따른 천이경향을 살펴보고자 중요치와 지표종 분석을 시행한 결과, 도시형과 도서형은 참나무군락으 로 유지되며, 산악형의 경우 피나무 및 까치박달 등 활엽수종의 천이가 이루어질 것으로 판단되었다. 식생유형과 입지환경 인자와의 CCA 분석결과, 동위도 상에서 종조성의 영향을 미치는 가장 큰 요인은 해발고도로 나타났다. 본 연구를 통해 한 반도의 산림생태계 특성을 이해하고 이에 따른 체계적인 보전 및 복원 계획 수립 시 필요한 기초자료를 제공하고자 한다.

Methods for Improving the Germination of Rhodotypos scandens (Thunb.) Makino Seeds through Endocarp Removal

Abstract : Rhodotypos scandens (Thunb.) Makino is known to have a seed dispersal that is thick and stony (endocarp + seeds) and has potential as a landscaping tree seed. In several Rosaceae species, seeds are covered with a hard endocarp, making the internal seeds water-impermeable and germination difficult. Here, we analyzed the morphoanatomical traits and germination properties of R. scandens seeds. To identify ideal seed propagation conditions, we immersed R. scandens seeds in sulfuric acid for varying durations and subjected them to phytohormone (gibberellic acid A3 and fluridone) and a cold stratification (CS) (5 °C) treatment after endocarp removal (ER). The R. scandens stony seeds did not increase in mass by ≥25.0%. Following ER, the seed mass increased by ≥50.0% with water absorption when compared to the initial dry mass. Seed surfaces showed damage and cracks through scarification after 1 h of immersion in sulfuric acid, failing to germinate. A combination of ER, phytohormone treatment, and CS improved seed germination compared to ER alone (26.0 ± 5.3%). Overall, R. scandens seeds showed a dispersal with a hard endocarp from the parent plant, and a pre-treatment with ER, phytohormones, and CS was required for effective seed propagation.

The genetic structure and demographic history of Zabelia tyaihyonii, endemic to Korean limestone karst forests, based on genome-wide SNP markers

Abstract : Similar to the global phenomenon, many plant species endemic to Korean limestone karst forests are at risk of extinction due to human intervention. Zabelia tyaihyonii is a familiar shrub, called “Hardy abelia” and “Fragrant abelia” growing in the karst forests of Korea, where it is one of the most threatened species. We investigated the genetic structure and demographic history of Z. tyaihyonii, which allow us to develop appropriate conservation and management strategies. The genetic structure was evaluated using a total of 187 samples from 14 populations, covering the entire distribution of Z. tyaihyonii in South Korea. We utilized 254 and 1753 SNP loci obtained via MIG-seq (Multiplexed ISSR Genotyping by sequencing) for structure and demographic analyses, respectively. The population demographic modeling was performed with site frequency spectrum. To gain further historical insights, we also employed ENM (Ecological Niche Modeling). We found two distinct clusters (CLI and CLII) of ancient origin (ca. 490 ka). Despite CLII experiencing a more severe bottleneck, both clusters showed similar levels of genetic diversity, indicating mutual historical gene flow. Their historical distribution range seems to have changed very little. We proposed a historical distribution scenario for Z. tyaihyonii, taking into account its intrinsic factors, and emphasized a more complex response to Quaternary climate change beyond simple allopatric speciation models. These findings provide valuable insights for conservation and management strategies for Z. tyaihyonii.

Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment and Ecological Characteristics Study of Abies nephrolepis in South Korea

Abstract : Abies nephrolepis is a climate-vulnerable species that inhabits high mountains in the Baekdu–Daegan range and is distributed along the southern limit line in South Korea, making it suitable for climate change research. This study aimed to observe spatial distribution changes according to scenarios using species distribution models for Abies nephrolepis, analyze the relationship between various environmental factors and Abies nephrolepis density, and contribute to the future conservation and management of subalpine coniferous forests. We conducted a field survey to identify the growth environment of Abies nephrolepis and observed potentially suitable habitats for Abies nephrolepis based on location information obtained through the survey. We also analyzed the relationship between the density of Abies nephrolepis and various environmental factors using multiple linear regression models. Based on the field survey results, most Abies nephrolepis natural habitats in South Korea showed an unstable form. Vulnerability analysis examining the influence of climate change showed that most of these habitats would be affected. We found that various biological factors were significantly related to the density of Abies nephrolepis (diameter at breast height, DBH ≥ 6 cm) and young tree density (stems/ha). We confirmed that species diversity and rock exposure variables had a relatively high impact. Clarifying the relationship between the density of Abies nephrolepis and various environmental factors can provide new insights for setting future restoration directions.

The Dormancy Types and Germination Characteristics of the Seeds of Berberis koreana Palibin, an Endemic Species of Korea

Abstract : Berberis koreana Palibin is an endemic plant native to Korea. In this study, we aimed to study the seed germination of this species using a water imbibition experiment, gibberellic acid (GA3) treatment (0, 10, 100, or 1000 mg·L−1), cold stratification (0, 2, 4, 8, or 12 weeks at 4 °C), move-along experiment, and phenology studies. In the water imbibition experiment, the weight of the seeds increased by more than 120% in 24 h. An analysis of the internal and external morphological characteristics of the seed revealed that the embryo was already fully grown from the fruit and did not grow thereafter. The final germination percentages for the cold stratification at 0, 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks at 4 °C were 12 ± 3.65, 32 ± 9.09, 59 ± 1.00, 59 ± 9.59, and 71 ± 1.91%, respectively. In the move-along experiment and phenology studies, a longer low-temperature treatment period resulted in a higher germination percentage. However, the GA3 treatment had little effect on the seed germination. Our results indicate that B. koreana exhibits an intermediate physiological seed dormancy.

ESG Issue Analysis Based on LDA: Focusing on Big Data News from 2009 to 2022

Abstract : The purpose of this study was to identify current issues and trends in Environmental, Social, and corporate Governance (ESG), and discuss the implications. To accomplish the research purpose, 16,047 cases of big data news were analyzed using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling methods, from a macro perspective. As a result of topic modeling analysis, six main topics were derived: (1) Science and technology innovation trends such as eco-friendly, renewable, hydrogen, clean energy, climate technology, and digital transformation, (2) Government policies related to domestic adoption of ESG global disclosure standards and support for Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) response strategy, (3) Activation of ESG investment such as ESG bonds, ESG index linked funds (4) Business collaboration agreements throughout supply-chains for sustainability such as Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU), shared growth, and win-win partnership for carbon neutrality (5) ESG committee's role and responsibility to improve the governance as the core of ESG (6) Countermeasures related to ESG disclosure global standards and evaluation criteria of K-ESG guideline. Among the topics identified, those related to trends in science and technology innovation accounted for the largest share (17.8%), with 2,856 media reports. Based on the derived results, policy directions and major issues were proposed.
