Discovery and Characterization of Chemical Compounds That Inhibit the Function

Abstract: Codonopsis ussuriensis (Rupr. and Maxim.) Hemsl is a medicinal herb commonly found in Korea, Japan, and the Russian Far East. However, its chemical composition and bioactivity have not been extensively studied. Thus, in this study, we aimed to examine and characterize the major components of the plant's roots. Liquid chromatography with high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) was used to identify the components of the crude extracts. The compounds that were identified were named ussurienoside I (1) and tangshenoside I (2). The identified compounds were tested in vitro for inhibitory action against bacterial neuraminidase, and the mechanisms of inhibition were revealed. Compound 1 significantly inhibited bacterial neuraminidase activity in a dose-dependent manner (IC50 = 56.0 µM). The neuraminidase inhibitor (compound 1) exhibited mixed type-I kinetic characteristics. The LC-HRMS data showed that the root extracts contained eight compounds. The findings of this study may aid in the development of bacterial neuraminidase inhibitors with medicinal potential.

설악산 분비나무군락의 식물사회학적 특성

ABSTRACT 본 연구에서는 최근 가속화되고 있는 기후변화로 인하여 쇠퇴가 우려되는 설악산 분비나무림을 대상으로 식물사회학적 연구를 수행하였다. 현장조사에서 획득된 70개 방형구 조사결과에 대해 TWINSPAN 기법을 이용하여 군락을 분류하고, DCA 방법으로 서열을 분석한 후 각 군락이 갖는 특성을 분석하였다. 설악산 분비나무림은 4개 군락(분비나무-댕댕이나무군락, 분비나무-시닥나무군락, 분비나무-당단풍나무군락, 분비나무-거제수나무군락)으로 구분되었다. 각 군락은 입지에 따라 분포 유형을 달리하였으며, 이는 해발고도, 사면 등 입지환경에 따라 서로 다른 미소환경이 형성됨으로써 종조성이 달리지기 때문이다. 각 군락은 분포 고도, 암석비율, 토양특성, 낙엽층 두께 등의 환경에서 차이를 보였으며, 그 결과로 종구성의 차이뿐만 아니라 출현종수 및 개체수, 식피율, 수목규격, 종다양도 등에서 군락 간 유의미한 차이를 보였다. 분비나무-댕댕이나 무군락과 분비나무-시닥나무군락은 높은 고도의 암석비율이 높은 곳에 입지하며 교목층 발달이 미약하였다. 반면, 분비나무-당단풍나무군락과 분비나무-거제수나무군락은 분포 고도가 상대적으로 낮고 토양비율이 높았으며, 교목층이 발달하고 종다양도가 높게 나타났다.

Comparative fruit morphology and its systematic significance in Ferula (Apiaceae) species from diffe

Abstract A comprehensive study was conducted on the fruits of 49 Ferula species, mostly from Central Asia, to describe the fruit surface microstructure and understand the systematic significance of this character for infrageneric delimitation. Ancestral states of the key morphometric characters were reconstructed via Mesquite, and distribution of informative characters at generic level was inferred using a Bayesian phylogenetic tree. In addition, chemical compound fingerprints for 21 Ferula species detected via HPLC-DAD were analysed with the COW algorithm in MATLAB 2019a, and optimised in a cladistic analysis, which showed incongruence with molecular data. This research aimed to define species groups within the economically important and taxonomically complex genus Ferula, and detected incongruence between the carpological, molecular and chemical data.

Antioxidant Activity of Asteraceae Plant Seed Extracts

ABSTRACT Approximately 10% of all angiosperms belong to the Asteraceae family. Plant species belonging to this family have traditionally been used as medicinal plants in the Korean Peninsula. We investigated the antioxidant activity of seed extracts from 14 species belonging to the Asteraceae family. Seeds with ≥ 90% percentage of filled seed and ≥ 50% final germination were used. The total phenolic content was the highest in Dendranthema zawadskii var. tenuisectum (13.5 mg of gallic acid equivalents (GAEs)/g seeds), followed by Dendranthema zawadskii var. latilobum (11.8 mg of GAEs/g seeds), and Callistephus chinensis (11.0 mg of GAEs/ g seeds). The total flavonoid content was highest in C. chinensis (9.8 mg of quercetin equivalents (QEs)/g seeds), followed by D. zawadskii var. tenuisectum (7.2 mg of QEs/g seeds) and Taraxacum officinale (6.3 mg of QEs/g seeds). Our results showed that 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) scavenging activity was highest in D. zawadskii var. tenuisectum (57.4 μg/ml), followed by T. officinale (59.1 μg/ml) and D. zawadskii var. latilobum (65.0 μg/ml), with a half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of DPPH scavenging activity. Furthermore, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline- 6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activity was highest in C. chinensis (26.2 μg/ml), followed by D. zawadskii var. tenuisectum (38.4 μg/ml), T. officinale (40.2 μg/ml), with a half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of ABTS scavenging activity. Based on a cluster analysis according to the antioxidant activity, the 14 species were classified into five groups, with group 4 having the highest antioxidant activity and group 0 having the lowest antioxidant activity. D. zawadskii var. latilobum, D. zawadskii var. tenuisectum, T. officinale, and C. chinensis belonging to groups 3 and 4, exhibited high phenolic content and antioxidant activity and can be considered potent plant-derived natural antioxidants.

Wettability control of paper through substitution between the hydroxyl group and carbon elements

Abstract: The surface of paper was treated to control wettability using argon-carbon plasma generated by a direct currentpulsed (frequency: 60 kHz) sputtering device with parallel-arrangement magnets. After plasma treatment, the C–C bond percentage in the C 1s region was inversely proportional to the C–OH bond percentage, while the ratio of C=O and O–C=O bonds only changed slightly. The change ratios for the increase in C–C and the decrease in the C–OH bonds were approximately the same, and the change ratio increased from approximately 5%–11% with an increase in the plasma current. The reduction ratio of the contact angle decreased from 0.945 to 0.182 (◦/s) with increasing plasma current. These results indicate that the water resistance of the paper surface was enhanced after the simple plasma treatment, and wettability could be easily controlled by changing the substitution ratio between C–OH and C–C elements, achieved by altering the plasma current.

관매도의 식물상

Abstract: We investigated the flora of Gwanmae island and discussed important vascular plants found on the island. We made plant list using voucher specimens collected from Gwanmae island from 2016 to 2021 and deposited in CNU. There are 500 taxa in Gwanmae island, comprising 103 families, 307 genera, 461 species, 4 subspecies, 32 varieties and 3 forms. Eight endemic plants of Korea were found including Saussurea polylepis Nakai. There are 15 red list plants designated by Ministry of Environment including Cleisostoma scolopendrifolium (Makino) Garay and Woodwardia japonica (L. f.) Sm. There are total 126 taxa of floristic regional indicator plants including 4 taxa of level V such as Juniperus procumbens (Siebold ex Endl.) Miq., 4 taxa of level IV such as Wisteria japonica Siebold & Zucc., 45 taxa of level III such as Rubus trifidus Thunb., 16 taxa of level II such as Glehnia littoralis F. Schmidt and 56 taxa of level I such as Carpesium glossophyllum Maxim. There are 32 invasive plants including Cerastium glomeratum Thuill.
