BGSV Hosts Workshop on Wild Plant Seed Conservation with Four Central Asian Countries
2024-05-23
BONGHWA, South Korea - From October 17 to October 21, 2022, the Baekdudaegan Global Seed Vault (BGSV) hosted a workshop at the Baekdudaegan National Arboretum titled 'Ex-situ Conservation Workshop.' The event aimed to educate and strengthen networks among conservation experts from four Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan). The workshop focused on the conservation of wild plant seeds and brought together local experts from the four Central Asian countries, alongside international network specialists. Participants reviewed the outcomes of the Central Asian network projects carried out over the past four years and explored future directions for these initiatives. Currently, BGSV is collaborating with institutions from these four countries on projects aimed at the ex-situ conservation of Central Asian wild plants. These collaborations include exchanging research personnel, training experts, and developing conservation strategies for Central Asian wild plant seeds. Through these efforts, BGSV aims to foster closer cooperation and enhance the preservation of plant biodiversity in the region.

Global Seminar on Expanding The Roles of Arboreta and Botanic Gardens for Forest Biodiversity Conservation Held at The 15th World Forestry Congress
2024-05-23
SEOUL, Republic of Korea – On May 3, 2022, the Baekdudaegan Global Seed Vault (BGSV) hosted a global seminar during the 15th World Forestry Congress held in Seoul. The seminar, titled "Enpanding the Roles of Arboreta and Botanic Gardens for Forest Biodiversity Conservation," featured prominent experts and leaders from various international organizations. Among the attendees were Kwangsu Ryu, president of the Korea Arboreta and Gardens Institute; Lise Lykke Steffensen, executive director of the Nordic Genetic Resource Center (NordGen); and Hugh W. Pritchard, professor at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The seminar provided a platform for these participants to discuss strategies for the conservation of wild plant seeds. A significant highlight was the discussion on collaborative efforts between BGSV and the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (SGSV) to establish a new safety net for global seed conservation. The synergy between the two seed vaults is deemed crucial for enhancing biodiversity and preparing for the increasing occurrences of both human-induced and natural disasters. Lise Lykke Steffensen emphasized the growing importance of seed vaults in facing future crises, stating, “The role of seed vaults in storing seeds has become increasingly critical. It's important that these two facilities work closely together to bolster biodiversity conservation.” Additionally, Hugh W. Pritchard, professor at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, presented on the topic of “Latest Trends in Conservation Strategies for Botanical Gardens.” He introduced cryopreservation techniques for preserving the cells and tissues of wild plants, which are challenging to store in seed form.
