BGSV Expands Seed Conservation Network from Central Asia to Armenia
2024-05-23
YEREVAN, Armenia - On November 27, 2023, the Baekdudaegan Global Seed Vault (BGSV) entered into a strategic partnership with the Institute of Botany of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of Armenia. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aims to expand the West Asian seed conservation network and enhance effective conservation efforts for wild plants in Armenia. Under this agreement, both institutions have agreed to collaborate on various areas, including seed conservation, collection of plant resources, joint research efforts for biodiversity conservation. This partnership highlights a shared commitment to environmental stewardship and the global conservation of plant species. The NAS of Armenia oversees three botanical gardens, including the Yerevan Botanical Garden. This garden, covering an area of 80 hectares, manages an ex-situ conservation collection that includes over 1,000 species, with 30 types of Crop Wild Relatives (CWR). It also features a seed bank that stores over 30% of Armenia's native flora. “We hope this agreement will foster effective conservation of Armenian wild plants in BGSV and establish a robust framework for ongoing cooperation,” said Kwangsu Ryu, president of the Korea Arboreta and Gardens Institute, which oversees BGSV. This initiative not only strengthens ties between South Korea and Armenia but also reinforces the global network committed to the preservation of biological diversity amid growing ecological challenges.
