KoAGI and UNDP Seoul Policy Center Explore Cooperation of African Biodiversity Conservation

Korea Arboreta and Gardens Institute(KoAGI) announced on April 1st that it is in discussions with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Seoul Policy Center regarding international cooperation measures for biodiversity conservation in Africa. The UNDP Seoul Policy Center is an international organization established through cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Korea and the UNDP headquarters. It plays a role in sharing Korea's policy expertise with developing countries and promoting global cooperation for sustainable development. It has primarily built cooperative frameworks with developing countries in the areas of public health, administrative innovation, climate and environment. The current discussions focus on KoAGI's participation as a partner in a pilot project being developed by the UNDP Seoul Policy Center. The project will provide African countries with policy advice, technical assistance, and education and capacity building activities for biodiversity conservation, with a particular emphass an establishing an ex-situ conservation model for wild plant species seeds. KoAGI possess expertise in various biodiversity conservation fields, including the conservation of native plant genetic resources, species restoration research, and the long-term storage of plant seeds. Based on its experience it is expected that KoAGI can make technical contributions that can promote tangible conservation effects in a African as well. Both institutions have acknowledged the growing biodiversity threats faced by African nations and share the view that applying Korea's proven conservation models could support the development of more sustainable ecosystem management practices in the region. Following more specific discussion, KoAGI intends to develop a tailored technology transfer and colloaboration framework by engaging with the policy authorities and on-the-ground implementing agencies of the target countries. Dr. SHIM, Sang-taek, the President of KoAGI, remarked, “It would be very meaningful if our institution's biodiversity conservation capabilities could contribute to biodiversity conservation in Africa. We hope that our biodiversity conservation technologies will expand globally through strengthened international cooperation in the future”.

[제목] 국립세종수목원, 한겨울에 만나는 봄 '우린 지금부터 봄' 제라늄 품종 전시회 개최 - 제라늄전문협회와 협업 제라늄 품종 전시회를 개최 - - 11월 22일부터 2026년 3월 1일까지 국립세종수목원 지중해온실서 - [ 내용] “연일 계속되는 초겨울 추위 속에서도 국립세종수목원 지중해온실에는 봄이 찾아왔어요!” 산림청 산하 한국수목원정원관리원(이사장 심상택)은 11월 22일부터 2026년 3월 1일까지 국립세종수목원 지중해온실에서 제라늄 품종 전시회 '우린, 지금부터 봄'을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 지난 2월 관람객의 큰 호응을 얻었던 '우린, 지금부터 봄'의 후속 전시로 제라늄전문협회(대표 김병희, 연구소장 최영현)가 수년 동안 수집하고 연구해온 제라늄 약 350품종을 한 자리에서 만나 볼 수 있다. 제라늄은 남아프리카가 원산인 식물로 꽃의 색이 화려하고 키우기가 어렵지 않아 한국 베란다 정원에 적합한 식물로 반려식물 애호가들에게 각광받고 있는 식물이다. 겨울철 대부분 식물이 휴면기에 들어가지만, 제라늄은 12월에서 3월까지 화려한 꽃을 피워 다가올 봄을 맞이한다. 특히, 이번 전시는 K-제라늄, 러시아제라늄, 유럽제라늄 등 쉽게 볼 수 없는 다양한 품종의 제라늄을 직접 볼 수 있으며 각각 품종별 특성이나 관리 방법에 대한 정보도 자세히 제공한다. 이와 더불어 전시 시작일인 11월 22일과 23일에는 9시부터 17시까지 사계절전시온실에서 '제라늄 플리마켓'을 운영해 초보자가 키우기 쉬운 품종부터 희귀한 품종까지 다양한 품종과 용품을 구매할 수 있으며, 전문가 상담 프로그램도 함께 진행된다. 신창호 국립세종수목원 원장은 “겨울은 식물이 잠시 쉬어가는 계절이지만 제라늄은 한겨울에도 꽃을 피우며 봄을 먼저 준비하는 특별한 식물”이라며, “전시를 통해 차가운 바람 속에서도 꽃을 피우는 제라늄처럼 2025년 한 해를 따뜻하고 행복하게 마무리하시고, 희망과 설렘으로 다가오는 새해를 준비하는 시간이 되기를 바란다.”고 말했다.
